Strada dei Parchi S.p.A., Italian road operator of the A24 and A25 motorways, in the framework of activities planned along the URSA MAJOR Corridor, has launched a pilot-project deploying drones for fire-safety and real-time navigation services in particular for heavy vehicles in tunnels.
The ITunnel - a next-generation solution originally created for smog/fire detection in tunnels, is revealing to be a multifunctional system, as emerged from on-site test being held from December 2014. Traffic monitoring, pollution measuring, dangerous goods monitoring and distribution of hydrocarbon neutralizing substances in case of incident are among purposes system could be deployed for.
The device benefits of high reliability in terms of monitoring, communication and control. It is outfitted with comprehensive on-board electronics that includes two cameras, sensors for pointing video-cameras (visible and infra-red signal), wireless data transmission of cameras signals to TCC via TCP/IP protocol, independent electricity supply, four autonomous electric motors, speakers and multiple batteries.
An effective system design allows to obtain extra-light and compact device. Equipped with remote-controlled motors the drone moves along the rail at 40 km/h and reaches an incident rapidly, avoiding obstacles. The device is capable to track its position on the rail and could be operated manually or automatically. An extinguishing system functions uninterruptedly and undeterminably.
The ITunnel system is of a maximum deployment flexibility while could be equipped by different devices to extend capabilities. Use of TCP/IP protocol allows to cut costs and reduce maintenance requirements. The interface architecture powers its easy integration and interoperability with other systems.
